Notes from the bench
Why 12 to 4
On a merchant ship the second mate stands the 12-to-4, twice a day. Maren stood it for six years on product tankers. The arc on the dial covers those hours, so at 3 a.m. the hour hand sits inside it. You don’t need to know any of that to wear the watch. It is still the reason the dial looks the way it does.
What we left off
There is no logo, no “automatic” and no depth rating on the dial. The name is engraved on the caseback with the batch and serial number. Our first prototypes had a printed logo, and it made the dial harder to read in the dark, so it went.
How it fits
39 mm reads small on paper and right on the wrist. The lugs turn down sharply, so the 46.5 mm lug-to-lug sits inside a 6.5-inch wrist. If your wrist is over 8 inches, the Dog Watch GMT 40 wears better.
Every reference ships with a sailcloth strap. Sam cuts them from sails retired by Hollis Sails, the loft downstairs, so no two have quite the same weave.
